Moon Prints

Updated: Apr 14, 2020

This Easter i'm helping to assist and deliver some awesome sessions doing Gelli Plate printing creating beautiful moon prints for their current theme "Moon Scapes". This weekend so far has been so much fun and such a busy event. I'm been up in the Clore studio again for this activity which is such a fantastic space for creative activities!

I've never used Gelli Plates before, they are so much fun! It's basically a thick silicone plate (we used the round ones) which you then apply a block printing ink onto using a roller. You can use multiple colours, we found sticking to one or two colours works well in workshops, using too many colours can smudge together too easily and you just get too many brown moons...

You can then use other tools like bubble wrap, playdough rollers, cutter to add patterns and texture on the plate, this helps to take up some of the colours and then these patterns get transferred. You then place down paper on top of the plate, rub and pat down to encourage the print to transfer. It's basically a quicker version of monoprinting.

I highly recommend the Gelli plates! They are a fantastic product, so much fun for everyone. Obviously we used them to print these moon like pictures, you could use them for so many ideas - hot air balloons, footballs, planets, Christmas baubles etc. The pictures could then be laminated for homemade plate mats.

The Gelli plates we used were the 8 inch circle pads:
