This week i've been asked to deliver screen-printing sessions for the foundation students. I've introduced them to the basics of creating an A4 repeat and exposing those onto a screen. We've kept it simple and they've printed their designs in black , just to see the print in its simplest form. I've said to them, please do return to the studio anytime if you want to continue with your prints, or print in a colour etc. Hopefully we'll have some return after these sessions. It's definitely been a challenge but something new that i wanted to try. Teaching a big group of 25, 18-20 year olds is not easy and I do take my hat off to the academic staff who teach them all the time.
I haven't taught them before and did slightly struggle with getting my head around the fact that they haven't chosen a specialism yet, and for them right now it's all about trying so many techniques and experiences and it's not about learning how to do something "properly" necessarily or perfectly, it's just about "doing" - just giving it a go and see what happens... pulling things apart, putting it back together in a different way etc. After all, doing something properly is what university is about, that where the progression and professionalism happens.
I've learn a lot in only one session, am i'm really glad i've been given such a fantastic opportunity to test my teaching skills. I'm so pleased with the repeat prints that the students produced!...
