Lock down is certainly going to test us all. Luckily for me i've got plenty to get on with.
I've had a good think about what can be most useful for the students at this really difficult time. I really do feel for them, it's so difficult be on a creative course to be told you now can't have access to facilities which they desperately need! It is heart breaking, I couldn't have imagined any of my student years interrupted by something as devastating as this.
But we do have to accept it and work with what we have, and as technician for the print students it is my job to help out and provide technical support where i can. Most of the students i support know how to use a heat press machine, but almost none of them actually own one at home. I do understand, it takes up a fair bit of space, they're heavy and expensive for the good ones.
However, most of the techniques used at UCA can be done with an iron - to some extent. The quality won't be half as good, the temperature won't be as accurate and the timing will take much longer... nevertheless it can be done. So i've started to build up a library of video tutorials for everyone to access. To start off with these will mainly show basic "how to" demonstrations for heat transfer techniques. We'll see how that goes first then i might think about demos on screen printing from home, who knows how longs we'll be working from home though....
Check out the first video - Plain heat transfer papers, the basics...
